Closing an AOL Account can be done in one of two ways. These two methods of canceling an AOL account include contacting AOL through telephone or postal mail. AOL does not offer a way to close an AOL account directly through an online canceling link.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • AOL account information (name, billing address and the answer to your account security question)
  • Telephone or postal mail access

    Cancelling By Phone

  1. Step 1

Gather your AOL account information, billing address and personal information.

  2. Step 2

Dial AOL Customer Service at (800) 827-6364. When prompted, say the word "cancellation" in a clear voice. You will be transferred to a customer service representative.

  3. Step 3

Tell the customer service representative that you'd like to cancel your AOL account. Provide the account information. The representative will try to keep you as an AOL customer, tell them you'd like to cancel. If asked why, tell them that you are just canceling the account.

  4. Step 4

Write down the name of the representative and the date and time you spoke with them.

  5. Step 5

Check your bank account or credit card statement to ensure that you are no longer being charged for AOL.

  6. Canceling by Mail

  7. Step 1

Send a typed letter to the following address:
    America Online
    PO BOX 17100
    Jacksonville, FL 32245-7100

  8. Step 2

Include in the letter the following information:
    Username
    Account number
    Billing address
    Your name
    Phone number

  9. Step 3

Verify that your account has been canceled. AOL should send out a confirmation letter to your billing address after receiving your request to cancel the account.

  10. Step 4

Check your bank account or credit card statement to ensure that you are no longer being charged for AOL.

Tips & Warnings
  • Calling to cancel will close the account faster than doing it by mail. Try to cancel the account before the current billing period ends to avoid paying for a whole new billing period. Contact AOL if charges continue to appear after canceling the account.
  • Do not log in or use your AOL account following your cancellation request as AOL may charge you for the time period between request and actual account termination.
