How to Get Better Gas Mileage in a Diesel
If you have a diesel car or truck, you will likely want to consider various ways to get better gas mileage. Diesel fuel prices have reached record highs and will not likely go down anytime soon. Keeping your vehicle well maintained, as well as making a few slight adjustments while on the road, can save you a lot of money over time.

1
Check your tire pressure. Tires in a diesel that are not fully inflated can affect your gas mileage by as much as 10 percent.
-
2
Perform a tune up in your diesel. Change your air filter and fuel filter if they are clogged or dirty. Regularly changing the filters can cause your diesel engine to run more efficiently. Replace spark plugs and spark plug wires if they are worn. Use a fuel injector cleaner and air intake cleaner as well to optimize fuel efficiency.

3
Adjust your loads and tow weights. Your diesel will lose about one mile per gallon of fuel for every 250 pounds that the vehicles carries. Only carry the essentials in your cab or trunk while driving.
-
4
Make changes to the way that you drive. Maintain a constant speed while driving on highways, typically between 55 and 65 miles per hour. Cruise control can help keep your speed steady. Idling can also affect gas mileage in a diesel. Turn off the vehicle if you are idling for longer than a minute.
-
5
Reduce drag for better gas mileage in a diesel. Racks, bug shields and car ornaments can have a negative impact on your gas mileage. Help stop air resistance by removing these items while driving.
-
6
Drive your diesel in the overdrive gear. A diesel with an overdrive automatic transmission will give you the best gas mileage while on the road.
