How to Install Cellulose Insulation in Walls

Traditional insulation can be itchy, hard on the lungs and hard to install. Fiberglass insulation also loses its insulating ability when the insulation is compacted around pipes and duct work or when it is pressed into small places. Spraying cellulose insulation in walls is a great alternative and it doesn't lose its insulating ability when packed in. It also provides a better insulation value than comparable fiberglass insulation.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cellulose Insulation
  • Spray machine
  • Hose
  • Coveralls
  • Goggles
  • Respirator
  • Mesh netting
  • Staple gun
  1. Step 1

Clean the stud bays of any debris.

  2. Step 2

Load the spray machine hopper with cellulose bundles and attach a water hose or fill the water tank with water, depending on the type of spray machine. Put on coveralls, goggles and a respirator.

  3. Step 3

Spray the cellulose insulation into the stud bays until it is flush with the edge of the studs. Over spray can be picked up off the floor and placed back in the hopper.

  4. Step 4

Fill small gaps around doors, window, pipes and ducts by inserting cellulose insulation by hand.

  5. Step 5

Staple mesh netting to the face of the studs to keep the insulation from falling out once it dries.

Tips & Warnings
  • Wear coveralls, a respirator and goggles when spraying cellulose insulation.

on 10/22/2009 Spray cellulose requires a glue/water mix or a glue packaged in the product plus a special spray gun. Most retail outlets will not have this equipment. Leave spray cellulose to the professionals. It is an excellent product and I have installed many tens of thousands of square feet of both spray foam and cellulose
