How to Change the BIOS on a Laptop

The firmware that runs the BIOS on a laptop occasionally needs to be upgraded or replaced. Taking the chip out can be a difficult process and is not recommended for everyone. Fortunately, in most cases, replacing the BIOS on a laptop is simply a matter of flashing the device and loading new firmware on it. Replacing the physical chip is possible, but in most cases they are hard wired onto a laptop’s motherboard. Following these steps allows a user to update or replace a systems BIOS program. This is commonly referred to as flashing it.

Instructions

    • 1

Find the computer’s make and model -- this can usually be found by starting up or looking on the bottom of most laptops. This is important because it will determine the exact software you need to flash the bios. Flashing a computer’s BIOS with the wrong software can have disastrous results.

    • 2

Download the new BIOS firmware -- once you know the exact make and model number of your laptop, you can download its BIOS firmware updates. Such updates are usually available from the computer’s manufacturer. If the laptop manufacturer has gone out of business, you will need to find the maker of the chip and its model. This information can be learned from the computer's setup program.

    • 3

Copy the BIOS flashing software, and insert the medium on which the file is stored into the laptop. Before letting the laptop boot up fully, go into its setup and make sure that the computer can boot from the medium that the flash file has been stored on. Adjust the laptop's boot settings as necessary.

    • 4

Reboot the computer. Windows users are long used to having to do this before making any change, but it may not be obvious to Apple or even some Linux users, as these operating systems require rebooting less often then their Microsoft running counterparts do.

    • 5

Run the software and enjoy -- most BIOS flashing programs run fairly quickly and will have the user running his computer in no time. Flashing a laptop's BIOS fixes bugs in the firmware program and allows extra functionality on many older notebook computers.
