How to Determine Tire Rim Size

If you are going to be putting a rim on your car, you need to make sure that the rim will fit both the car and the tire you want to use. There are three primary sizes and you need to determine which you have. To do this, you need the numbers for the diameter, the width and the bolts.

Instructions

    • 1

Look on the back of the rim and try to find the size stamped on the metal. It should be in three parts. The first part will tell you the diameter. The second tells you the width. The last (which has a decimal) tells you the bolt pattern and size. If you cannot find or read the numbers, move on to step 2.

    • 2

Measure the distance from the edge on the back of the rim to the corresponding edge on the other side. This gives you the diameter.

    • 3

Calculate the distance from the edge on the back of the rim to the edge on the front of the rim. This is the width.

    • 4

Determine the greatest distance between the bolt holes. This will tell you the bolt pattern and size.

    • 5

Write all this information down and compare it to the specifications for your car and tire.
