How to Replace a Washing Machine Spin Belt

The average washing machine uses a spin belt that transfers the power from the motor to the transmission to pump water in and out of the machine and runs the spin cycle. If your washing machine's belt is broken, it still may sound like the washing machine is working, but you will be able to tell quickly that no water is being pushed in or out of the machine. If your belt is worn or loosened for any reason, it is likely that your washing machine will work on occasion or will make screeching noises throughout the length of the cycle. Either way, it is recommended that you replace the spin belt.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Unplug your washing machine and turn off the electricity at the breaker panel.

  2. Step 2

Turn off the washer's water supply, using the valves on the back of the washer.

  3. Step 3

Remove the washing machine's access panel with your screwdriver. Please refer to your washing machine's manual to figure out the panel's location, which is normally on the back or bottom of the machine. Locate the belt.

  4. Step 4

Unscrew the clamps securing the pump coupling. This is a rubber-like piece that connects the motor and the water pump. Remove the damaged belt from the machine.

  5. Step 5

Place your new belt over the transmission pulley first. Then place it over the motor pulley. Once the belt is secure but not overly tight, it is time to reconnect your pump coupling to once again secure to motor to the pump.

  6. Step 6

Test your belt by pressing on the longest, straight stretch of belt. Make sure it moves no more than 1/2 inch. If the belt does not move at all, it is too tight and will burn out quickly. If belt moves much further that ½ inch, tighten it to make sure the machine runs correctly.
