Things You'll Need:
- gardening shears
- gardening gloves
-
Step 1
Learn where to cut rose stems for deadheading.Deadheading involves simply snipping off spent, dead blooms to allow for more blooming. Deadheading roses is easy, but it must be done in the right place on the rose bush.
-
Step 2
Wearing gloves, cut the stem just above the group of five leaves.Put on a pair of gardening gloves to avoid being pricked by the rose's thorns. Look at the stem that holds the dead bloom. If you follow the stem down from the bloom, you will see a grouping of five leaves. This is where you will want to make your cut. Cutting the stem in the right location will allow new growth and blooms.
-
Step 3
Be sure to cut stem at an angle. When you cut the stem, be sure to cut the stem at an angle. If you cut the stem straight across, it will not be able to shed water and the stem may rot.

on 8/3/2009 My hedges in front of my house all the way down are red roses. They are simply gorgeous. Thanks for the tips on how to deadhead them. I was trimming the straight across, didn't know I should trim them at a angle, but it makes since. thanks 5*
