How to Use a Thompson Humidor
Thompson & Co. has an established reputation for cigars--in fact, it advertises itself as the oldest mail-order cigar company in the United States. It also sells humidors for keeping those cigars at the proper humidity level. You don't want to fill a humidor right off the bat, though. First you need to take steps to make sure it's humid enough, but not overly moist.

Instructions

1
If the humidor doesn't have one, buy a hygrometer to gauge moisture. Put the hygrometer in an airtight plastic box along with a small cup of salt moistened with water. Leave it there at least 8 hours, and remove the hygrometer.
-
2
Calibrate the hygrometer. Use a small screwdriver to turn the screw on the back of it until you get a meter reading of 75 percent relative humidity.

-
3
Prepare your humidifier. Place it face down in a bowl of distilled water or a Thompson Cigar solution such as TCC. Keep it halfway submerged for about 2 minutes. Remove it and pat it dry with a soft dry cloth.
-
4
Attach the humidifer and the hygrometer on the lid of the humidor.
-
5
Place a cup of distilled water in the humidor, close the lid and let it sit for 24 hours. This will refresh the wood and raise the level in the box to an optimal 65 to 75 percent relative humidity. If the level is too high, open the lid for an hour or so.
-
6
Put your unwrapped cigars in the humidor and close the lid.

Tips & Warnings
Remoisten your humidifier when the humidity level drops. Keep your humidor out of the sun. To maintain the best cigar flavor, don't polish your humidor--only dust it.
