If you are a foreign national married to a U.S. citizen, you may apply for a tourist visa (also known as a "B-2 visa") so that you may visit your spouse in the U.S. With this type of visa, you will only be able to visit the U.S. for a temporary period and must return to your home country once that period has ended. The B-2 tourist visa should not be confused with the K-3 visa, which is a non-immigrant visa that allows a foreign spouse to live in the U.S. while his immigration application is pending. If you are certain that the tourist visa is what you want, here's how to obtain one.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Fill out all appropriate visa application forms. All applicants must complete Form DS-156, a non-immigrant visa application. Male applicants must also complete Form DS-157, a supplemental non-immigrant visa application.

  2. Step 2

Have a valid passport. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay in the U.S. You should also make sure your passport has a blank page for the visa stamp.

  3. Step 3

Obtain 2 color pictures of yourself. The pictures should be passport-sized (2-inches by 2-inches) and show your full face against a light background.

  4. Step 4

Obtain evidence of non-immigrant intent. Such proof may include a proof of home ownership in your country, evidence of business holdings or other assets, a round-trip ticket, or evidence of work or studies to be completed upon your return. You may also submit a letter from your American spouse, detailing the length and purpose of your trip.

  5. Step 5

Collect evidence of financial sufficiency. You should be prepared to submit bank statements, evidence of your employement, or a letter from your spouse indicating that you will have enough money to cover your expenses for the duration of your stay.

  6. Step 6

Provide these documents to the nearest American Consulate in your jurisdiction and pay the processing fee.

  7. Step 7

Await processing of your visa application. Processing times vary, depending on individual situations. When your application is approved, you must go to the American Consulate to receive your visa stamp in your passport. Generally, you will be allowed to stay in the U.S. for 6 months.

Tips & Warnings
  • It is possible to seek a change of status to other non-immigrant classifications if your intentions change after arriving in the U.S.
