How to Choose Snorkeling Gear

Snorkeling is a great way for sea lovers to enjoy all the wonders of the ocean without having to become a certified diver. A very recreational sport, it is often best done in clear waters and reefs that attract numerous kinds of sea life. However, having the right equipment is key. No one wants to swallow seawater, get something in their eyes or have fins that don't propel them through the water.

Instructions

    • 1
      A snorkeling mask

Start with the mask, which is a molded set of goggles and nose piece. Look for something that has a silicone seal because they last longer. To see how well it fits your face, hold the mask up to your eyes without exhaling. A slight suction feel should form around your nose and eyes. That is a good fit. If not, try a different pair.

    • 2
      A snorkel

Get a snorkel next. Look for something that is relatively long (allows you to swim deeper) and fits easily in your mouth. Also, look for something that has a lip guard, which helps prevent saltwater from getting in a person's mouth.

    • 3
      Fins

Get fitted for some fins, which help propel the swimmer through the water. The fins have a place for a person to fit their feet into, and that needs to be snug. Loose fins can be lost at sea.

    • 4

Choose a wetsuit that is light weight for swimming in warmer waters and something that is heavier for cold. While some people choose not to wear a wetsuit in the warm water, it is advised especially when snorkeling for a long time because the wetsuit will prevent sunburn.

    • 5

Get a camera that can take shots underwater and has a strong strap that can be wrapped and tightened around the wrist.

Tips & Warnings

  • Snorkeling gear comes in a wide variety of colors, so have some fun when choosing items. Most masks are sold with a snorkel attached, but feel free to trade them out. Most (if not all) chartered snorkeling tours require people to wear a life vest.

  • Fins are tough to walk in, so be careful when trying them on.
