A sinus infection, or sinusitis, is a condition resulting in inflammation of the nasal sinus linings. There are four pairs of primary para-nasal sinuses--or cavities--on each side of the face: frontal (above the eyebrows), ethmoid (near inner eye between the nose), sphenoid (in the skull behind the eyes and nose) and maxillary (in cheekbones). Sinus infection results when inflammation of the linings of one or more of these sinuses occurs as a result of bacteria collecting in the mucus moistened nasal cavities. Thin, watery-like mucus is filtered through the nose daily but during sinus infection, the inflamed sinus linings are unable to remove mucus as normal, causing it to thicken and cause congestion. Symptoms of sinus infection are very similar to those of the common winter cold, however, there are steps that you can take to prevent a sinus infection during the cold season.
Avoid cigarette smoke and other pollutants. Sensitivities to smoke, perfumes and environmental pollutants are common and cause allergic reactions which irritate sinus linings and interrupt the normal process of mucus removal.
2
Drink lots of water. Proper hydration keeps nasal passages moist, preventing drying which can lead to inflammation of sinus linings. Proper water levels also maintain the watery consistency of nasal mucus which otherwise would thicken, causing blockage and inflammation.
3
Use a humidifier. Use of a humidifier in your home adds moisture to the air, which counters drying caused by inhaling pollutants and chemicals. A humidifier also assists in keeping sinuses properly moistened.
4
Alter your diet. Certain foods cause allergic reactions in sinusitis sufferers and should be removed from the diet to prevent sinus infection. They can include dairy products, eggs and chicken. It is also beneficial to add foods high in antioxidants into your diet, such as broccoli, garlic, grapes, spinach, carrots and tomatoes. They improve your immune system which is essential for fighting infections.
5
Elevate your head while sleeping. Doing this, with extra pillows, assists with sinus drainage which will reduce congestion and mucus build-up.
Tips & Warnings
Wash your hands frequently to cut down on transmission of bacteria.
Use a nasal irrigator.
Take hot showers and inhale the steam.
Fill a bowl with hot, steaming water, cover it and your head with a towel and inhale to clear the sinus passages.
