How to Power Wash & Seal a Deck
Wooden decks must be power washed and sealed every few years. This protects the wood from water, extreme heat, UV exposure and other harsh weather conditions. Exposure to these elements will cause an outdoor deck to crack, warp or fade if it is not properly sealed. These easy steps will help you protect your deck this season. Does this Spark an idea?

Power Washing the Deck
-
1
Rent a power washer if you do not own one. Many home improvement stores will rent power washing equipment by the day.
-
2
Sweep the entire deck to remove dirt, leaves and other debris before you begin power washing.
-
-
3
Cover any plants near the deck with a plastic tarp to protect them from any chemical cleansers you may be using.
-
4
Attach a garden hose to the power washer. Choose a nozzle attachment and attach it to the sprayer. Smaller nozzle openings will generate a more powerful spray. Plug the power washer into an electrical outlet.
-
5
Add a deck cleaner of your choice or a light household cleanser like dish detergent. Check the manufacturer's directions to find out how much to dilute the cleaner.
-
6
Start at one end and spray down the deck evenly as you slowly walk toward the other side. Keep the power washer's nozzle pointed at an angle so you do not hit the deck straight on with full pressure. This can damage the surface of the deck.
-
7
Let the deck dry out for 24 to 48 hours. Be sure it is completely dry before sealing or the sealant will not stick to the wood.
Sealing the Deck
-
8
Select the type of deck sealer you will be using. Oil-based sealers will last longer than water-based. Tinted sealants offer the most protection from weather and UV rays, but do not let the deck's natural grain show through. Clear and semi-transparent sealers are also available.
-
9
Use a garden sprayer or long-handled paint roller to apply a coat of deck sealer. Be sure to spread it out evenly and do not let any sealer puddle up on the deck. Apply sealer to any hard-to-reach corners or crevices with a small paintbrush.
-
10
Let the deck dry for 2 to 3 days before allowing people to walk on it.
