How to Cover a Cornice Board
Covering a cornice board can seem like an intimidating task, but in reality it is really quite easy. Choose a fabric that will match or complement the drapery fabric on your window. Most any fabric will work, but when considering the amount you will need, take into account stripes and designs that have a certain direction. You may need to seam the fabric together depending on the width of your cornice board. These instructions are for a basic rectangle cornice board-shaped box. Things You'll Need
- Cornice board box
- Quilt batting -- amount determined by cornice board size
- Fabric -- amount determined by cornice board size
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
- Hot glue gun
- Fabric fringe or trim

Measure the width of the front of your cornice board and the side returns. Add 2 inches on each end for your fabric width measurement. Measure the vertical length of your cornice board and the top. Add 2 inches on each end for your fabric length measurement. Cut one piece of fabric and one piece of quilt batting using these measurements.

Lay the quilt batting on your work surface. Center the cornice board upside down on the quilt batting. Apply a bead of hot glue to the inside of the back long edge of the cornice board. Fold the batting to the inside and press it into the glue. Apply a bead of hot glue to the inside of the side returns on the same back edge. Fold the batting to the inside and press it into the glue. Make sure the batting is smooth over the outer surface of the cornice board and attach the batting in the same way on the front long side and side returns.

Tuck under the natural fold that is created on the side returns to smooth the side. Apply a bead of hot glue to the inside edge of each side return and press the remaining 2-inch excess to the inside. Trim the excess batting edges on the inside of the cornice board.

Place the fabric wrong side up on your work surface. Center the cornice board on the fabric. Make sure the cornice board is lying in the right direction if you are using a fabric with a directional design. Attach the fabric in the same way as the batting.

Apply fringe or trim to the bottom edge of the cornice board front and side returns by applying a bead of hot glue to the front for trim or underneath for fringe.
