How to Spray Minwax Polyurethane
Spraying Minwax polyurethane requires a well-ventilated area and an indoor space, which can be covered with cardboard to prevent spray from attaching to anything but the project piece. Safety goggles, gloves and a mask to cover the mouth and nose must be worn when spraying polyurethane. Minwax polyurethane is a fast-drying material that must be sprayed quickly and evenly to complete a project successfully.
Things You'll Need
- Minwax polyurethane spray
- Safety goggles
- Mask to cover nose and mouth
- Plastic or work gloves
- Two fans to cross-ventilate workspace
- Cardboard -- enough pieces to create a temporary cubicle around the workspace
- Sandpaper -- 300-350 grit recommended
Instructions
-
-
1
Open all windows near the workspace.
-
2
Place a fan on opposite corners of the room and set on medium power. Do not face fans toward workspace; the air generated by the fan will blow the spray away from the project.
-
-
3
Spray project in a slow but steady motion in a horizontal pattern. Start spraying from one end of the project and work toward the middle. Hold spray nozzle at least a foot above the project.
-
4
Sand any rough spots or debris from the project after it dries with sandpaper.
-
5
Spray second coat of Minwax polyurethane onto project. Repeat sanding and additional layers of polyurethane if necessary.

Tips & Warnings
Polyurethane projects can be cleaned with wood floor wax cleaner. Spraying outside provides better air flow during project, but adds the obstacle of unwanted leaves, grass and bugs from getting onto the project while it is still wet.
Polyurethane is extremely flammable. If polyurethane is ingested, contact emergency medical professionals immediately.
