How to Make Sachet Bags

Sachet bags are little bags that can be filled with a variety of sweet-smelling scents. While most people focus far more on what they put in the sachet bags than what the bags themselves look like, you can really up the ante on your little sachets just by putting a little time and effort into the workmanship on the sachet bags themselves.

Things You'll Need

  • Loosely woven linen
  • Ribbon (1/4 inch in diameter or less)
  • Glue gun
  • False flowers
  • Potpourri
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Sewing machine
  • Yarn needle

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the pieces of cloth for your sachet bags. Using the ruler to guide your cut, cut a rectangular piece of cloth 12 inches long and 5 inches wide. This will give you a sachet bag 6 inches long and 5 inches wide.

    • 2

Use a zig-zag stitch to sew up the sides of the bag. Once you have folded the rectangle in half, the bag's bottom will be done. All you need to do now is sew up the sides to the very top of the rectangle. You will leave the top of the bag open so you can stuff it with sweet-scented items.

    • 3

Cut a length of ribbon with which to tie the bag. If you want long tails on the ribbon, then make it as much as 16 inches long. If you want shorter tails, you can make it as short as 12 inches.

    • 4

Thread the ribbon around the edge of the bag to make a drawstring. Tie a knot in one end of the ribbon so that it does not pull through the bag as you work. Then, thread the yarn needle with the ribbon, and sew wide stitches -- 1/2 inch long each -- around the edge of the bag. You can leave as much 1/2 inch in between each stitch. When you get to the end, do not tie the ribbon off snugly, but just put a knot in the other end of the ribbon. When you pull the ends together to tie the ribbons in a bow, you will cinch the top of the bag shut. Now, you are ready to fill up your bag and tie it shut. You can tie the bow around a sprig of fake flowers if you like to make the bag a little more ornamental.

Tips & Warnings

  • Add beads to the tails of the bow to make it more decorative.
