How to Fix a Disk Defragmenter

Disk Defragmenter is a Windows program that helps speed up a PC by rearranging files on the hard drive. Sometimes, for various reasons, the program won't properly operate. When this occurs, there is an easy method of checking your system.

Instructions

    • 1

Click on "Start" in Windows. Then, select "Run..." on the right of the menu.

    • 2

Type "cmd" in the dialog box.

    • 3

Once CMD opens, type in "c: chkdsk /f" in the prompt. It will ask if you want this volume to be checked when you restart. Type "y" as the response.

    • 4

Restart your computer. When it loads it will come to a screen that will check the disk. Check the disk for any errors in the system. If errors are found, they will automatically be fixed.

    • 5

Load Windows after the disk has been checked and open Disk Defragmenter. It should now be working properly.

I just want to thank you so much for your help. I have been looking to fix this issue with my defrag for over two months now, and finally, I found the correct answer. It was so funny to see the exact words I was seeing typed here. Anyway, it works, but I have one other question, and hopefully, you can help me out again. After all this was fixed, and I attempted to defrag it is saying now I only have 5% and I need 15 % at minimum of memory. I did a disk clean-up of my hard drive, which really did clean up a lot, but when I went back to defrag it still said I only had 5%. I went ahead and did the degrag anyhow, but am wondering, why is this still saying I only have 5% when I know it cleaned up so much? Thanks again,
