Monopoly Express

When players don't have the several hours necessary to participate in the property purchasing game Monopoly, they have an alternative. Hasbro has released Monopoly Express, a dice-based game where winning comes down to one good throw. Playable by two to four players, the game requires only a small play area and the ability for each player to keep score. The following is a guide to playing Monopoly Express.

Things You'll Need

  • Monoploy Express game
  • Game board
  • 4 houses

Instructions

    • 1

Set up the game by placing the game board in the center of the players. Keep the houses and dice within the play area. Give each player a score sheet and writing utensil. Each player will keep track of his own score.

    • 2

Decide who goes first, play continues in a clockwise direction from the first player. The first player rolls all the dice except the house/hotel die. The icons on the rolled dice will dictate how play continues.

    • 3
      Policeman icon

If any of the dice have a policeman on them, place them on the game board over the Go to Jail square. If during a turn you roll three policemen, your turn ends and all money gained that round is lost.

    • 4

Mark $200 on your score sheet for any green arrow that appears on the dice; this represents the go space.

Examples of the color group dice

Decide which color groups you are going to try and complete. These fall under properties, railroads and utilities. Place the matching dice over that color group. The more valuable the group, the less chance a player has to roll the matching colors.

    • 6

Once a color group has been completed during a player turn, add the house/hotel die to the remaining dice in play. Each time a house is rolled, take one of the house tokens; a broken house means put back a house token; and a hotel gives you $5,000 to your score if you have four houses in your possession. A "get out of jail free" icon removes one policeman die from the board.

    • 7

The player will continue to roll the remaining dice as long as he wishes, each time either completing more color groups or collecting more policeman dice. The player can stop rolling at any time, remove all the dice from the board and the next player begins his turn.

    • 8

At the end of each turn (assuming the player did not go to jail), the score is added up. Complete color groups yield the amount listed on the board. One incomplete group per turn will be scored by adding up the value on each dice present in the group. Each house in a player's possession will net $1,000.

    • 9

The game ends when one player reaches $15,000.

Tips & Warnings

  • A question mark on a die acts as a wild card and can be placed on a space in any color group. Only one per group is permitted. Blank dice neither help nor hurt a player.
