Shiny paints will not accept new coats of paint. The new paint will not stick to the old paint; the new paint will simply peel away. Also, when refinishing previously finished pieces of furniture, you have to sand the old finish layer before adding new coats of paint. Sanding can be difficult, and impossible in hard-to-reach areas. A liquid sander deglosser is the easiest way to reduce the shine of glossy enamel paints.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Liquid sander deglosser Cloth rags Latex or blue nitrile gloves
  1. Step 1

Put on a pair of gloves to protect your hands from the chemicals in the deglosser. Open the deglosser bottle and place a clean cloth rag over the opening. Invert the bottle and allow the deglosser to saturate the rag.

  2. Step 2

Wipe the rag over the surface of the enamel paint. The deglosser should immediately reduce the gloss of the paint. Allow the deglosser to dry.

  3. Step 3

Wet another rag with water and wipe this rag over the painted surface again to remove any residue left by the deglosser. Allow the water to dry.

At this point, the gloss on the painted surface should be sufficiently reduced.

Tips & Warnings
  • Jacso TSP (tri-sodium phosphate) can be used as a substitute for a liquid sander deglosser.
  • Read the warning label on the deglosser and become familiar with the precautions.

on 8/8/2009 I'm trying to use the same Kleen Strip Sander Deglosser but no shine seems to be coming off the wood trim area I tested it on. On the same area I have applied it twice and tried both rubbing it in with a coarse rag and then wiping of as well as leaving it on until it dried. Is there another brand or is my technique wrong?
