How to Paint New Drywall

Things You'll Need
- Sanding block
- 150-grit sandpaper
- Drop cloths or plastic sheeting
- Painter's tape
- Paintbrush or edging tool
- Primer
- Paint tray
- Paint roller
- Roller cover
- Interior paint

Check that all joint compound on the drywall is smooth. Sand any rough places. The surface must be even to achieve a professional, finished appearance.

Protect floor surface with drop cloths or plastic sheeting. Cover mantles, hearths and other fixtures that touch the walls. Tape edges of trim, such as door frames, window casings and moldings.

Pour primer into the paint tray. Use a brush or edging tool to apply one coat of primer to the edges of the wall and around any fixtures.

Roll on one coat of primer to all wall surfaces. The coverage should be even, with no thin spots. Allow to dry thoroughly. Wash the brush, roller and tray.

Use brush and roller to apply two coats of paint. Allow the paint to dry completely between coats. Touch up any thin areas. Wash the brush, roller and paint tray. Remove the tape and drop cloths, once the paint has dried.

Tips & Warnings
Calculate total square feet of wall space to determine the amount of primer and paint you need. Use a primer formulated for new construction drywall, for best results. Latex primer and paint cleans up with soap and water. Oil-based products will require paint thinner for clean-up.
