How to Make Wood Coyote Calls
If you enjoy making various animal calls, then adding a coyote to your repertoire can add some punch to your outdoor animal calling performances. Whether you want the call to attract coyotes for some reason, or you just like making coyote noises, a homemade wooden coyote call is a fun craft project that will result in hours of noisy fun. Making a homemade coyote call can be rewarding and fun, but the results you get may vary.
Things You'll Need
- 6-inch-long-by-1-inch-wide piece of dowel rod
- Standard clarinet reed
- ½-foot drill bit with a drill.
- One-sided razor blade
- Wood glue
Instructions
-
-
1
Drill a hole through the center of your dowel. Use the drill and the foot-long bit so that the hole extends the length of the dowel.
-
2
Use your razor blade to carefully whittle down the clarinet reed so that it just barely fits inside of the hole in your dowel. Take a little bit off each side symmetrically, then give it a try. Do not whittle a lot off before testing or you may slim the reed down too much.

-
3
Insert the reed gently into the end of the dowel hole. It should be very tight.
-
4
Blow inside of the front end of your dowel. The reed should vibrate and make a noise. If it doesn't, gently pull it out again and reinsert it until you can blow in the front end and make a sound.
-
5
Secure the reed with the wood glue. When there is a sound coming from the reed, take a couple of drops of wood glue and place it on the direct corners of the reed. Then let it dry overnight. This glue will secure your reed inside of the dowel, and you will be good to go.

Tips & Warnings
Do not use your call to actually call coyotes as they are wild animals and can be unpredictable. Just use it for fun.
