How to Make a Stereoscopic Image

With a little preparation and the right software, making a stereoscopic 3-D image is easy and fun. Stereoscopic images have been a great way to make three-dimensional images from two photographs for many years and have been used in both still photography and the motion picture industry. The images use color filtering to allow each eye to see a slightly different version of the images, fooling the brain into seeing an image in 3D.

Things You'll Need

• Digital camera
• Computer
• 3-D photo editing system
• Red and blue stereo 3-D glasses

Instructions

Taking the Pictures

1. Find a stationary subject. A subject with both good foreground and good background detail is best.

2. Move to between 10 and 15 feet away from the subject.

3. Take the first picture.

4. Move the camera an inch or two to the right or left of the position of the first photograph.

5. Take the second picture.

Making & Viewing the 3-D Image

1. Import the pictures into your computer.

2. Place the pictures into the appropriate right and left panes of your 3-D image editing software.

3. Combine the two images into a single stereoscopic image.

4. Put on the 3-D glasses and view the image. Stereoscopic images can also be printed for viewing.

Tips & Warnings

• Taking several images from the second alternate position will ensure that you have a good pair of images for the creation of the 3-D image.
