How to Delete a Vista Update Cache

Windows Vista saves all of its system updates in a cache. Since these updates are automatically installed when they are downloaded, there really is no point in saving them in a cache. It takes up precious memory and can eventually bog down your system. While you cannot delete the update cache itself, you can delete all of the files within the cache thus freeing up space on your hard drive.

Instructions

    • 1

Right-click on your desktop and click "New." Choose "Text Document."

    • 2

Double-click on the new text document to open it.

    • 3

Type the following code into the text document:

      CD \
      CD% Windir%
      CD SoftwareDistribution
      DEL / F / S / Q Download

    • 4

Click "File" and choose "Save as." Type "vistacache.Bat" as the file name and choose "All Files" under file type. Click "Save" and close the file.

    • 5

Right-click on the file and choose "Run as administer." The program will delete the files in the Vista update cache. Repeat the process every six months or so, to keep the cache from collecting too many updates.
