Things You'll Need:
- Long pole or straight tree branch
- Buck knife
- Spool of steel wire
- Wire cutters
-
Step 1
Identify an area that is thick with squirrels, and choose a tree that is frequently used by them.
-
Step 2
Select a fallen tree branch that is reasonably straight, and long enough to reach the first layer of branches in your chosen tree. A pole can serve as a substitute if no suitable branch is available.
-
Step 3
Cut the leaves and smaller branches from the tree branch, if you are using one. Try to leave surface knots in place, as these will become handy later. If you are using a pole, skip this step.
-
Step 4
Cut stretches of steel wire. Tie these around the branch or pole, and then tie the open end into a noose. The noose should be about two inches wide, and there should be about two or three inches of wire extending it off of the pole. Therefore, how long each wire should be is the diameter for the branch or pole, plus four to five inches. The knots of a tree branch will be handy for anchoring the wires. The wires should start and stop about 18-24 inches from the top and bottom of your branch or pole. This is now your snare pole.
-
Step 5
Plant the snare pole against the tree, at a diagonal angle. As the squirrels run up and down the pole, they are likely to get caught in one of the snares. The struggle to free themselves will cause them to fall off the pole and strangle.
