How to Make Bentonite Clay Poultice

Bentonite clay is reputed for its ability to draw impurities and toxins out of the body. While some advocate taking bentonite internally for this purpose, it may also be applied externally as a poultice. A bentonite clay poultice is, according to folk wisdom and anecdotal evidence, an effective way of curing some spider bites and relieving general inflammation.

Instructions

    • 1

Mix equal parts of warm water and olive oil. Start with 1/8 cup each for a small poultice and 1/2 cup each to cover a larger area.

    • 2

Add bentonite clay powder to the water and oil mixture. Continue to stir as you add the clay a little bit at a time.

    • 3

Adjust the mixture by adding more clay or water and oil, as necessary, until it reaches an elastic, almost rubbery consistency that stays in place well.

    • 4

Apply the paste you made to the inflamed area. Let it dry for 4 or 4 hours. There may be a slight pulling sensation as it dries---this is normal.

    • 5

Rinse the clay poultice off with warm water and reapply, if necessary.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can cover the poultice loosely with a clean cotton or wool cloth, if necessary, to help keep it clean. Bentonite should be readily available in most health food or supplement stores.

  • Spider bites and other inflammation, especially if the cause of the inflammation is unknown, may be dangerous conditions. Always consult a health professional, if possible, before attempting treatment with alternative remedies.
