Things You'll Need:
- Video equipment (camera, tripods, on-camera light, wireless microphone)
- Editing software and computer
- Flyers/brochures
- Business cards
- Demo reels
-
Step 1
Work on your shooting and editing skills. You will hopefully already have training in filming and editing so you'll understand equipment, how to deal with different situations and what to do when things go wrong. If not, then get started taking some classes and getting the proper training to learn videography and video editing.
-
Step 2
Obtain all the equipment you need, such as a camera, tripod, wireless lapel microphone and lights. You will also need a computer and video editing software.
-
Step 3
Film a wedding for free. You may know a friend or relative who is getting married; if not, look at online forums, where many people look for low- or no-cost services for their weddings in exchange for use of their wedding as portfolio material. Shoot and edit the wedding and create a demo reel of the highlights to burn on DVD and show potential clients later on.
-
Step 4
Choose a business name and get your business license and bank account set up. Set up a website also, if you can. Include a video of your demo reel so people can see your shooting style and skills.
-
Step 5
Create a package list that includes the price of your services and what is included in each package. Create printed fliers or brochures with this information as well as your contact information and website link, if applicable. Have business cards made at a quick printer and hand them out to brides and other potential clients.

Step 6
Participate in a wedding expo. These are held year round in many locations. Look online or check with your chamber of commerce for information on upcoming expos. Set up your booth with demo reels, your marketing materials and a TV so you can have your video showing the entire time. This is a great way to meet engaged couples and book potential clients.
