How to Repair the Config File Using Windows CD ROM
The "config" file in the Windows XP operating system stores a large amount of system data and settings. This file can become corrupted over time, in which case you will need to repair the file using the Windows XP installation CD-ROM. Before repairing your "config" file, back up all of the data on your hard drive.

Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into your computer's disk drive.

Restart your computer. When prompted, press any key to boot up to the Windows XP CD-ROM.

Press the "Enter" key after the Windows XP CD finishes loading the system files.

Press the "F8" key to accept to the Windows license agreement.

Select the hard drive partition with the corrupted "config" file using the up and down arrow keys.

Press the "R" key to begin repairing the "config" file. The repair process could take up to an hour to complete. When it finishes, the system will restart. Eject the installation CD.
