Bromelain is a compound with medicinal properties and comes from the stem of the pineapple plant. It has been heralded for its ability to reduce inflammation, becoming a popular addition to arthritis and sports injury treatments, as well as a digestive aid in cancer and gout.

How to Take Bromelain

1. Check with your doctor about the dosage, generally 500 mg in a tablet form two times a day.

2. Take on an empty stomach to aid absorption unless taking it as a digestive aid.

3. Take after a meal if the meal has created an upset stomach.

4. Do not take it before surgery, as it can act as a blood thinner, which may prevent clotting during surgery.

5. Apply topical bromelain to treat burns in some cases.

6. Do not give bromelain to children.

• Bromelain is a nutritional supplement that may have adverse side effects with other medications. Consult your doctor on all drugs and supplements you consume.

• An allergic reaction to bromelain manifests with the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and menorrhagia. Consult a doctor immediately. Bromelain should not be taken for more than 10 days in a row.
