Salt is a crystalline stain that can cause white spots on carpets or rugs. You may notice salt stains on the carpet in your car or on carpet by an entrance door. You can remove salt stains using a carpet shampoo or a vinegar mixture, but it may take several attempts before getting the results you want.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Stiff brush
  • Vacuum
  • Carpet shampoo or vinegar and water solution
  • Clean, absorbent towels
  1. Step 1

Brush the area with a stiff brush to dislodge the salt and debris.

  2. Step 2

    Vacuum the carpet thoroughly.

  3. Step 3

Apply a small amount of carpet shampoo to the area using a sponge or clean cloth. Or use a mixture of 1 part vinegar to 1 part warm water (for example, 1/2 cup vinegar and 1/2 cup water).

  4. Step 4

Wait 15 minutes for the solution to dissolve the salt stain.

  5. Step 5

Blot the area with a clean, dry cloth. For best results, do not rub or scrub the area.

  6. Step 6

Rinse the cloth with warm water and squeeze out the excess. Dab the area with the damp cloth to rinse the carpet.

  7. Step 7

Repeat as needed for stubborn salt stains.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not pour water on the carpet or soak the carpet in water. This can lead to mold or mildew if the water is not removed.
