Clean central air vents are a key part of an efficient climate control system. Dirty vents can also make a home unsafe when the central air conditioner is running. Dust, dirt and mold get blown throughout the home, contaminating the air. Having clean central air vents is especially important for people with breathing problems.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Wear a face mask when cleaning your central air vents. Mold inhalation can be very hazardous to your health. Even if there is no visible mold on the outside of the vent, there could be hidden mold inside the ducts.

  2. Step 2

Unscrew the screws holding the vent covers on the wall and remove the covers. Use warm water and soap to wash the covers. Soak them in the soapy water if there is stubborn dirt that will not come off. Mix in a small amount of bleach if mold and mildew is a problem in your home.

  3. Step 3

Remove the air filters from inside the ducts, if your system has these. Wipe down the inside of the duct near the vent opening. A lot of debris builds up in the area closest to the vent and this spot is hard to vacuum.

  4. Step 4

Use the long attachment on your vacuum to clean deep into the central air ducts. Reinforce the connection between the hose and attachment with tape before reaching into the duct. This will keep the attachment from falling off deep inside the duct, where it will be hard to retrieve. Use the brush attachment to scrub off any caked on dirt.

  5. Step 5

Put the air filter back in the duct. Screw the vent covers back onto the walls.

Tips & Warnings
  • Clean your central air vents annually to keep your home healthy and mold-free.
  • If you have a recurring mold problem, you may have to call an air conditioner repairman to clear out the ducting deep inside the system. Severe contamination may require replacement of the ducts.
