Instructions

    • 1

Create a work area for painting. Set up two sawhorses and lay down tarps if you're painting inside. Place some rags on top of the sawhorses so the sawhorses don't make marks on the door.

    • 2

Remove the handle, locks, doorknockers and all other hardware from the door. Also, remove the hinges and weatherstripping, if present. Gently place the door on top of the sawhorses.

    • 3

Remove any loose or chipping paint using a paint scraper. Repair dents or damaged areas.

    • 4

Clean both sides of the door with mild soap and water. Make sure the door dries thoroughly.

    • 5

Lightly sand the entire door, using medium-fine sandpaper or a sanding sponge. Then, wipe the door with a damp rag to remove the sanding dust.

    • 6

Apply masking tape around windows, glass or areas that you don't want painted.

    • 7

Apply one or two coats of an oil-based primer over the entire door. An aerosol primer can provide a quick, even coat, but you can also use a sprayer or brush. Be sure the paint is completely dry before applying a second coat of primer.

    • 8

Paint the door using a professional paintbrush, roller or sprayer. Apply at least two coats of paint. Make sure the paint is completely dry before applying the next coat of paint.

    • 9

When you're finished painting the steel door and it's completely dry, attach the door hardware and hinges and add new weatherstripping, if necessary. Hang the door.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be sure to make repairs and fix any dents before painting. A new paint job will magnify any damaged areas on the door.

  • Be sure to paint in a well-ventilated area.
