How to Open a XBox 360 Memory Card

The Xbox 360 has the capability to use a memory card. This allows the user to save arcade games or take his saved games to play at a friend's house. Sometimes these cards (which use the same technology as USB flash drives) will fail and the chip will need to be replaced.

Although it is easier to buy a new memory card, if a new chip is available, the card can be taken apart. The user can replace the chip by following these instructions. This process can also be used to upgrade the amount of storage available on a Xbox 360 memory card.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the four green dots on the side of the memory card. These dots are on the outside of the card. These green dots the areas where the screwdriver must be inserted to pry the case open. Keep in mind that a user opening the memory card usually voids the manufacturer's warranty.

    • 2

Insert the screwdriver into one of the corners and pry the cover loose. This should not be difficult, but it might take a little effort. Use the screwdriver on each of the four corners until the memory card cover comes loose. Take the top off of the Xbox 360 memory card casing.

    • 3

Remove the memory card chip. If you have a new memory chip to replace the old one, carefully insert it in the bottom cradle. Apply super glue to the four plastic holes near the corner of the bottom cover. Do not get glue on the chip itself.

    • 4

Put the top of the memory card over the chip. Wait for the glue to dry and everything should be back in place. If the procedure has been done correctly, you now have a new memory card. You may even have a memory card with a greater amount of storage capacity than you had before replacing the chip.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep the super glue away from the chip or you will have to buy a new memory card, whether or not you want to.

  • Opening the case on memory cards can void the manufacturer's warranty. Proceed with caution before opening your memory card
