Clowns are normally thought of as silly, jolly, happy characters that are symbols of childhood innocence and fun. That's why when clowns turn evil, it can be really freaky. Dressing up as a scary clown is a great way to get attention at your next Halloween or masquerade party. There's no need to buy an uncomfortable and expensive mask when it is so easy to apply scary clown makeup at home with these simple techniques.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Hair clips or headband
  • Face paints
  • Black eyeliner
  • Set of make-up brushes
  • Gelatin
  • Red food coloring
  • Puffed breakfast cereal, one piece
  • White glue
  • Fake teeth
  • Frizzy wig
  1. Step 1

Prepare to apply the makeup by washing your face with warm, soapy water. Remove any makeup you may already be wearing. Pat your face dry. Put your hair out of the way with hair clips or a headband.

  2. Step 2

Apply a layer of the base color, which is usually white or a skin tone. Start with a dab of color and work outward. Use your fingers to spread the makeup evenly. Don't forget to apply makeup under the chin area and to cover your eyebrows and lips. Reapply layers until a satisfactory depth of color is reached.

  3. Step 3

Use eyeliner to outline the features you want to accentuate. Use harsh, sharp angles, especially for the eyebrows and lips. Make the lip area large, extending far past your natural lips. Look at the pictures linked to in the Resources section below for ideas.

  4. Step 4

Using the make-up brushes, fill in the eyebrows and mouth with a dark color, such as maroon, black or dark purple. Paint your nose dark red. Smudge gray or green around your eyes to make them appear sunken. Allow the paint to dry between each application.

  5. Step 5

Add a scar or two to make your clown makeup appear extra scary by mixing a teaspoon of gelatin with a tablespoon of hot water until it has dissolved. When the gelatin has cooled, it should be gooey. Apply the gelatin to your face in the desired scar shape, and brush on red food coloring to cover.

  6. Step 6

For a finishing touch, add a wart by attaching a small, round piece of puffed breakfast cereal to your face with white glue. Once the glue is dry, cover the cereal with brown or black face paint. Don't forget to add a pair of fake rotten or pointy teeth and a frizzy wig.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remove paint with baby oil when you make a mistake or when you are done with your party.
