Mozilla Thunderbird is a free email software that you can download when you download the Mozilla Firefox browser. However, you do not have to download or use Mozilla Firefox to download and use Mozilla Thunderbird. If you already have an email account with a service like Road Runner, you can set up Mozilla Thunderbird as your email program instead of Outlook or another email program. Once you download Mozilla Thunderbird there are only a few steps to set up Mozilla Thunderbird for use.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Change your account settings. Open Mozilla Thunderbird and click on "Tools" and then "Account Settings." This will launch the account wizard for you.

  2. Step 2

Enter email account information. Once the account wizard is open, select "Email account" and click "Next." Then enter in your name and email address. Click "Next" when done.

  3. Step 3

Enter your email server information. Select "POP" and enter the incoming server name. If you do not know your server you will need to ask your email provider's customer service. Using Gmail as an example, the incoming server would be "pop.gmail.com." Remove the check from "Use Global Inbox" and click "Next."

  4. Step 4

Enter your user name and account name. List the user name that you have for your email account in each box. For example, this could be "jdoe" or "jdoe@gmail.com" in the boxes. Click "Next" when done and enter in an account name. This will be what you call the account. It can be anything that you want. Then click "Next." Verify the information and click "Finish." This will take you back to the "Account Settings" window.

  5. Step 5

Complete outgoing server information. Click on "Outgoing Server" in the open window. Enter in the details for outgoing server that you got from your email provider. For example, for Gmail you would enter in "smtp.gmail.com " for the outgoing server and change your "Port" setting to "955." Once you do that, click "OK" and your account will be ready for use. You will need to enter your user name and password the first time you access it though.
