How to Choose CPAP Machines
CPAP is an acronym for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure. CPAP machines are prescribed by a doctor to assist patients who suffer from sleep apnea. When a person suffers from sleep apnea, she stops breathing several times when sleeping. When the brain realizes that a sleeper has stopped breathing, it will wake the person up enough for breathing to resume again. Unfortunately, this makes for a restless night. A CPAP machine uses air pressure to keep a sleeper's airway open while she sleeps.

Talk to your prescriber. The doctor who prescribed your CPAP machine should be able to help you determine what some of your CPAP needs are.
-
2
Talk to your insurance company. Different companies are willing to pay different amounts for a CPAP machine. Some carriers may have a specific list of covered machines. It is important to know how much your insurance will cover and decide how much you are willing to pay out of pocket if necessary.

Consider the CPAP features you might need. In addition to varying options for air pressure delivery, manufacturers of CPAP machines offer choices such as altitude adjustments, built in humidifiers, carrying cases, foreign electricity compatibility and the ability to run on a car or boat battery.

When selecting a face mask, remember that fit is important. The mask must be tight enough to form a seal but not so tight as to be uncomfortable or confining.

When you think you have found a CPAP machine you like, try renting the same model or check to see if you can find a seller with a rent-to-own plan. This way you can make sure that you have selected the best CPAP machine for you before you are committed.
