Instructions

    • 1

Measure the height, length and depth of your cornice board. To determine the amount of fabric that you need to upholster the cornice, multiply the depth, or the width of the sides, times 2 and add it to the length of your board. For example, if the depth, or side width, is 8-inches and the length of the cornice is 48, you would add 16 to 48. In addition, you'll need to add 6 inches to the result, 64 in this case, so that you'll have excess fabric to staple to the board. Add 6 inches to the height of your cornice board as well so you'll have enough fabric to staple.

    • 2

Cut a section of fabric and batting to the resulting dimensions from Step 1. Batting is not a necessity; you could simply wrap the board in fabric alone. Batting adds a little poof and helps make the upholstery fabric look padded.

    • 3

Lay the fabric face down with the batting on top. Spray adhesive to the front and side panels of your cornice board. Center the cornice board face down lengthwise on the layer of fabric and batting.

    • 4

Begin in the center of the cornice board and pull the fabric and batting layer up over the face of the board. Staple the excess fabric to the back of the cornice, keeping the fabric and batting layer taut. Work your way to both corners from the center of the board, stapling every ½ inch.

    • 5

Wrap the sides of the cornice board the same way as the face, beginning in the corners. Fold the corner fabric neatly, as if you were wrapping a present, and then staple it to the back of the board. Continue stapling your way to the end of the cornice.

Tips & Warnings

  • Upholstery fabric is stiffer than other fabric making it a good choice for this project.

  • Spray adhesive in a well ventilated area.
