1
Clean the ladder of all dirt and debris, including any old paint with the sandpaper. If you want an old look, simply leave the paint peels on it after cleaning.
-
2
Paint or stain the ladder with any desired color. Allow it to dry completely, approximately 2 hours. Apply three coats or more of polyurethane sealer, allowing it to dry in between coats. Let it dry completely overnight.

Lean the ladder up against the wall at a desired angle. Measure the distance from the wall to the front of the ladder legs. This measurement is the length of 1-inch by 2-inch boards you need. Cut the boards to size or have the lumberyard cut them.
-
4
Attach the boards to the bottom of each ladder leg with finishing nails and hammer. This does not have to be very sturdy, as it is only a base to keep it from falling over.

5
Lean up against the wall and place quilts or afghans on the rungs of the ladder.
