How to Hang a Deer Head

You have finally bagged the trophy deer you have been dreaming about. It may be a huge buck that sports a multi-pointed set of antlers and scores high in the record book, or it may be a smaller deer that does not look like much to other people but is a trophy to you. Either way, taking deer heads to a taxidermist for mounting and then bringing the heads home to hang on the wall is a popular way for hunters to commemorate their kill and remember their hunt.

  1. How to Hang a Deer Head

    • 1

Look at the bracket for hanging that the taxidermist has placed on the back of the deer head. While taxidermists use a variety of brackets, most of them work to hang a deer head in conjunction with a screw. Select a screw that fits snugly into the bracket.

    • 2

Decide where you want to hang the deer head. Common places are over fireplaces or in basements, but the location is entirely up to you. Just keep in mind that if the animal has a large set of antlers, you need to take those into account, since they likely will protrude above and out from the head. So make sure the place you select is not too close to another wall or the ceiling.

    • 3

Use a stud finder to locate a stud in the area of the wall where you have decided to hang the deer head. Use a pencil to mark the place where you will put the screw. It is possible to use a screw and anchor to hang a deer head, but screwing the screw directly into a wall stud is advisable since it will be sturdier.

    • 4

Drill a hole in the spot with the pencil mark.

    • 5

Screw the screw into the hole you drilled. Leave enough of the screw head protruding from the wall to hang the deer head on.

    • 6

Pick up the deer head and hoist it to where you will hang it. Use a ladder if necessary. Fit the screw into the bracket so the deer head hangs flush and level against the wall.

Tips & Warnings

  • Before hanging a deer head, consider placing it in an easy-to-reach location, since you will have to clean it from time to time.

  • Take care when climbing a ladder, especially when you are also holding a deer head. Consider asking someone for help.
