Step 1
Have your lumber company cut all wood pieces to measure. You will need a piece of 3/4-inch plywood, 3 feet by 12 feet cut in four equal sections (each, 3 feet square). You will also need a 3-foot-square piece of alder. Use medium- and fine-grit sandpaper to smooth the top and sides of the alder top square. Stain the alder hassock top with two or three coats of stain, using a disposable paintbrush. Allow the stain to dry thoroughly between each coat.
-
Step 2
Build the square plywood frame with 1 1/2-inch finishing nails.
-
Step 3
Staple 1/4-inch padding around the four sides of the frame. Cover the sides of the frame with fabric, tucking and stapling the raw edges on top and bottom to the inside of the frame. Nail a line of decorative nail heads from bottom to top on both sides of the corners to decorate the outside of the frame.
-
Step 4
Use wood screws to attach the alder top to the frame. The bottom of the hassock is finished.
-
Step 1
Cut two 3-foot-square sections of fabric and four sections of fabric 3 feet by 4 inches.
-
Step 2
Stitch the four 4-inch wide-sections to each other, lengthwise, to form a 12-foot rectangle. Right sides together, pin the rectangle to one 3-foot-square square section and stitch. Trim and steam the seams. Repeat for second square top, but leave one side open. Use a piece of 4-inch foam padding, 3 feet square, as the foam insert. Slide the foam insert into the square pocket and hand stitch shut. Steam the pillow top and place on the hassock.
-
Step 3
To keep the pillow top from sliding, glue several strips of Velcro to the bottom of the pillow and top of the hassock.
