Securing the Outlet Box
-
1
Whether you are replacing an existing light fixture with the chandelier or making an entirely new installation, care needs to be taken to ensure that the outlet box is securely fastened to the ceiling joists. The most secure way of doing this is to cut a 2 X 4 so that it will fit snugly between two ceiling joists. Then nail an outlet box to the 2 X 4 in a location that allows it to fit through the hole in the ceiling. Nail the 2 X 4 to the ceiling joists at a height that allows the outlet box to fit flush with the bottom edge of the ceiling. Use 16d nails.

After the outlet box is securely fastened, run 12-2 non-metallic sheathed cable from the source of electricity to the switch box on the wall. Run another piece from the switch box to the outlet box.
