How to Save Pumpkin Seeds

If you've ever wanted your own patch of perfect pumpkins, it may be easier than you think. When you decorate for Halloween or make pumpkin pie, save the seeds from your favorite pumpkin. Once spring arrives, you will be prepared to grow your own pumpkins. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Knife
  • Healthy pumpkin
  • Large spoon or other utensil for cleaning pumpkin
  • Strainer
  • Cookie sheets
  • Paper towels
  • Envelopes

      Cut open the top of your pumpkin with a knife.

      Scoop out the seeds.

      Put the seeds in the strainer and wash, separating them from the "goop."

      Spread paper towels on your cookie sheets. Place the seeds on the paper towels, making sure to line them in rows so that they are not piled on top of each other.

      Let the seeds dry for at least a month in a clean, cool and dry area.

      Once your seeds are dried, store them in envelopes. You are ready for planting season!

Tips & Warnings

  • Seeds from hybrid pumpkins may not sprout. It is difficult to know whether your pumpkins seeds are from hybrids unless you grew the parent plant.
