Whether you have children of your own or you simply know a few children who are near and dear to your heart, it is common to want to incorporate children into a wedding ceremony. In the days of the very traditional wedding ceremony it was often hard to get children involved. Now, however, there are many options available. No matter your relationship to the children, their age or the children's interest level in wedding ceremonies, it is now easier than ever before to include children in the festivities.

Instructions

    • 1
      Flower Girl

Assign younger children the role of ring bearer or flower girl. Children as young as 4 can be entrusted with this important role. Younger children can even be pulled down the aisle in a wagon by older children if they are too young to walk.

    • 2

Allow your own children to give you away. While it is customary for a woman's father to fill this role, a wedding with children is hardly customary. Since a woman's children play a pivotal role in her life, this can be a meaningful gesture to have your children walk you down the aisle.

    • 3

Make your children the maid of honor or best man. If the children you would like to incorporate into the wedding ceremony are not your own, consider dubbing them junior attendants and place them in the wedding party as well.

      Wedding Ceremony

Plan a complete family wedding ceremony. This new type of ceremony involves each member of the new family, children included, reciting vows to become a new family. This is particularly meaningful when the children will be adopted by their stepparent.

    • 5

Have the children perform a song, dance or poem reading as a part of the ceremony. This can be cute and amusing for small children or very heartwarming and touching for older children.

Let the children help with the planning and decorating. Even very young children can help in covering chairs, laying the aisle runner and running items to where they need to go. Older children can be more involved in the whole process of planning a wedding ceremony.
