How to Install a Built in Oven

A built-in oven is installed within a cabinet space in your home to make it seem like it's built within the wall instead of standing on the floor. The exact installation method can differ depending on the size and type of oven, but there are basic similarities. When installing a built-in oven, you must make sure the cabinet space you place it in is sturdy and level (to keep anything cooking within from sliding). You also need proper clearance within the cabinet to prevent overheating. This oven type is wired to a junction box instead of being plugged in. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the height, width and depth of your storage cabinet or other area the oven will be built into to make sure the oven will fit before purchasing it. This includes room for air and cooling, along with the oven's actual dimensions. Consult an expert at the store for the exact dimensions you'll need for your oven.

Make sure there is a junction box near the cabinet where you can properly wire the oven to your electrical system. Check the oven's manual for the voltage and wiring requirements needed.

    • 3

Connect the oven's wiring to the junction box. These instructions can vary depending on the residence you're installing it in and local safety codes for electrical wiring. Generally, this involves linking the red, black, white and possibly green leads with their color counterparts in the box's branch circuit.

    • 4

Remove the oven door, usually by opening it up and lifting it off of its hinges.

    • 5

Place the oven within the cabinet and secure it with the bolts included. If the cabinet has no holes to place the bolts in, use a 1/8-inch drill bit (or whichever size your instructions state) to drill holes into the cabinet in the right places.

    • 6

Attach any included trim panels that surround the oven. There is often a panel for the oven's bottom edge and possibly the sides. These attach directly to the oven body with the screws provided. Check the screws to see if they require a Phillips or flat-head screwdriver.

    • 7

Reattach the oven door by sliding it down into its hinges all the way into place and then closing it.
