Airsoft guns are a popular variant of BB guns. Airsofts shoot plastic projectiles, which are less likely to cause serious injury than traditional metal BBs. These guns may be powered by springs, compressed gas or battery-powered electric motors.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Miniature screwdrivers
  • Instructions for your gun model

    Preparation

  1. Step 1

Determine if your gun has an "adjustable trajectory" or "adjustable accuracy" feature (check the instructions or box that came with your gun). It should be clearly indicated if your gun has either one of these features.

  2. Step 2

Prepare your gun for testing by setting up a target at the desired distance and a firing bench with a gun rest or sandbag to stabilize the gun. The gun may only be accurized for a particular distance and must be readjusted for precision shooting at other distances.

  3. Step 3

Test fire your gun at the center of the target. Be sure the gun does not move when fired. Do not test your gun on a windy day.

  4. Step 4

Mark the hole in the target with a pen or pencil so that you will remember which shot is which. This hole will be your baseline for adjustment. Notice whether the hole is too high or low with respect to where you were aiming.

  5. Adjustment

  6. Step 1

Make sure the weapon is unloaded. Remove the magazine, if any, then clear the action of the gun. If the gun is gas powered, remove the canister if it is separate from the magazine.

  7. Step 2

Find the location of the adjustment screw (consult the instruction manual). For most pistols, the slide must be removed and turned upside down. However, on other models the screw may be accessed through a hole on the side of the frame.

  8. Step 3

Turn the screw a quarter turn in the desired direction. Usually turning it clockwise will cause the gun to shoot higher, while turning it counter-clockwise will cause it to fire lower. Take care only to turn it a quarter turn.

  9. Step 4

Test fire the gun again, as described in Section 1. Compare the results with your original test shot. If the new hole in your target is still not where you were aiming, the repeat the process until it is. This may take several tries.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be sure that all your test shots are fired under the same conditions, with the same sight picture and pellets. Otherwise you will never get the desired consistent result. Some of the higher-quality airsoft guns have an adjustable trajectory feature that allows the shooter to calibrate the gun's accuracy for a particular distance. This is normally done by means of an adjustable screw inside the gun. Normally, only vertical trajectory is adjustable, not side-to-side accuracy.
  • Wear eye protection when shooting. Airsoft pellets tend to ricochet. Be sure that no people or pets are standing downrange of where you are shooting.
