Go for the water bottle. Alcohol poisoning causes dehydration, so drink as much water as you can to help get rid of the alcohol in your system by making you urinate more. By no means, however, should you use this as a sole treatment option. Because the problems connected with possible alcohol poisoning require specialized medical treatment, you should get to a hospital immediately.

Get your stomach pumped. You will need to go to the hospital emergency room to get this done. It involves the insertion of a tube in your mouth or nose that goes directly into your stomach, then saline is put through to empty your stomach of toxic levels of alcohol. This should be done as soon as possible, before alcohol can get into your bloodstream.

Battle dehydration caused by alcohol poisoning in the body through the administration of IV or intravenous fluids directly into your vein. A nurse inserts a hypodermic needle attached to a syringe into your vein, while you lie down, so that the necessary fluids go immediately into your bloodstream. How long you will need to have IV fluids going into your body depends upon how dehydrated you are and how serious your condition is

Employ the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy. This is helpful when your breathing has slowed to a dangerous level due to alcohol poisoning, as it helps to increase oxygen supply to your brain, tissues and cells and restores normal breathing. You are placed inside a pressurized chamber where concentrated oxygen is administered for up to 2 hours.

Consider kidney dialysis to rid your bloodstream of alcohol, which may be necessary, if you ingested methyl alcohol. This treatment is routinely utilized when there is kidney failure. During a dialysis treatment, which takes up to 4 hours per session, you will have a needle inserted into one of your blood vessels. The machine is comprised of a chamber for dialysis fluid and another chamber for your blood, which will pass through the machine to filter out waste products as they are soaked up by the dialysis fluid and your blood is returned to your body.

Tips & Warnings

  • Only consume one alcohol drink per hour to avoid getting alcohol poisoning. Don't try to get sober by drinking any coffee, because caffeine makes you more dehydrated. Call 911 or get to a hospital as quickly as possible if alcohol poisoning is suspected to delay further risk. Be aware that alcohol poisoning can kill you or cause brain and organ damage.
