How to Adjust the Electric Choke on EMPI Progressive Carburetors
Adjusting the electric choke on an EMPI progressive carburetor will have a positive effect on vehicle performance: a choke out of adjustment will cause the engine to burn a richer mixture than is necessary for optimum service, create added wear on parts and consume fuel unnecessarily. The choke has an electric heating element in it that, as the engine warms, allows the choke to open gradually until the choke is fully open and the heating element is off.

1
Make the initial adjustments to the choke with the engine off and cold. The choke adjustment is round, faces the fan shroud, is hard to get to and is held in place by three small screws. Before making any adjustment, mark the housing of the carb body with a marking pen, in case a return to the original settings becomes necessary.
-
2
Loosen the three screws. Open the throttle for the choke plate to move freely. Turn the electric choke housing in the direct opposite that you want the choke plate to move. Since the engine is cold, the choke should be closed or nearly so.

3
Check the wire between the coil and the choke. Since the choke has an electric heating element in it, there must be a wire from the positive (+) of the coil to the connector on the choke. The connection must be firm. Any corrosion that may have accumulated can be removed with a small wire brush.

Re-tighten the three screws and observe the choke as the engine warms up. The choke should be fully open when the engine is at operating temperature.

Tips & Warnings
The adjustments can be made regardless of ambient air temperature; however, on colder days, warming the engine to determine if the choke is fully open may take slightly longer.
Before undertaking any work on or near rotating parts or machinery, remove watches, rings and neckties. Wear tight-fitting or short sleeves.
