How to Make a Coffee Filter

No coffee filter? No problem. If you have some common items around your home, you can make your own coffee filters. These are good for camping trips or if you just discover that you have run out of coffee filters at home. Follow the directions below to successfully produce coffee by making your own filter. Things You'll Need

  • 2 tbsp. ground coffee per serving
  • Electric coffee maker that uses a filter
  • 2 - 4 paper towels or napkins
  • 1 8-inch square piece of clean cotton cloth

Instructions

    • 1

      Open the coffee maker filter basket. This is the place where you would typically put a coffee filter in.

      Place two pieces of paper towels or paper napkins flat inside the filter basket. The sides of the paper towels should reach up the sides of the filter basket. Additional sheets of paper towel might be needed if the brand you use is especially thin or has small sheets.

      Add 2 tbsp. of ground coffee on top of the paper towels or napkins.

      Close the filter basket and turn the coffee maker on to prepare coffee.

      Discard the paper towels, or napkins, used to make the coffee, and the used coffee grounds after the coffee has been made.

      Substitute an 8-inch square piece of clean cloth for the paper towel and follow steps 1 - 5 listed above.
