How to Get a State of Alabama Teaching Certificate

Certified teachers are just one group of people who help mold America's youth into responsible, educated adults. Intelligence, compassion and a love for teaching are unofficial requirements for teachers in any state, including Alabama. Official requirements to get a state of Alabama teaching certificate include higher education and a proven readiness to instruct.

Instructions

    • 1

Complete a bachelor's degree program at a reputable, accredited institution. Having taken education courses will prepare you for the tests you will need to take for your Alabama teacher's certificate and can shorten the time it takes to get certified.

    • 2

Take the required exams, including the Alabama Prospective Teaching Program (APTTP) and Praxis in your specialized subject area. The Alabama Department of Education has links to exam requirement information on its website (see "Resources"). You must earn a passing grade on all exams to be considered for a teaching certificate.

    • 3

Contact the Alabama Department of Education to get an application package for teaching certification. The certification office is located at 5201 Gordon Persons Building, Montgomery, Alabama 36130.

    • 4

Fill out your application. You may be required to get recommendations from your college professors or those who have supervised you in previous jobs.

    • 5

Write to your college registrar to obtain official copies of your academic transcripts.

    • 6

Complete and sign the consent form and the fingerprinting cards that are part of the background check that will be performed during the application process. A criminal background check is run on each applicant by the state of Alabama and the FBI.

    • 7

Pay two application fees, both in the form of a check or money order made out to the Alabama Department of Education. The exact amounts will be listed on your application. One fee is for the application processing; the other is for the processing of your fingerprint cards.

    • 8

Make copies of everything (except for the transcripts, which must remain in sealed envelopes sent directly from your college) before mailing your teaching certification application to the certification office. Your certificate will come in the mail.
