How to Remove Bluing From Chrome Exhaust

Intense heat causes an unattractive yellow, brown or blue discoloration on chrome, which is referred to as "bluing." Removing it is often not as easy as merely polishing the chrome. Many chrome polishes do not remove this discoloration, so you must choose products specifically for this problem. In addition, you must be willing to spend some time and effort on this job. Even the products that remove bluing do so only with help from your muscles.

Things You'll Need

  • Microfiber cloths (or a buffing tool)
  • Blue-B-Gone, Blue Job, Flitz polish or similar specialized product
  • Water

Instructions

    • 1

Apply the bluing-removal product to the chrome. If the product is in powder form, mix it with water to form a paste.

    • 2

Spread bluing removal product onto the chrome using a microfiber towel or a similar, non-abrasive towel or sponge.

    • 3

Work the product into the stained chrome using short, circular movements. If available, use a chrome buffer (often sold at the same stores that stock chrome cleaner); otherwise, do it manually as best you can.

    • 4

Rinse the solution off with clean, cool water. To prevent spots, rinse off all traces of the cleaner.

    • 5

Dry the chrome well with a microfiber towel. If any traces of bluing remain, apply more product and repeat the steps until you've removed as much bluing as you can.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't use abrasive sponges or abrasive cleaners on chrome exhausts, as tempting as that may be. This will scratch the chrome finish, doing more damage than good. Never clean or polish chrome exhausts when they are still hot or even very warm, because this can damage the finish.
