How to Demagnetize a Credit Card

Credit cards store your account information on a magnetic strip. Credit card machines read that information when your card is swiped. "Demagnetized" means that the information on your card is scrambled to the point of being unreadable by credit card machines. You may wish to demagnetize your card when you dispose of it so that no one will be able to get your personal information off the card.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Lay the credit card down magnetic strip upon a flat surface.

  2. Step 2

Rub the magnet over the magnetic strip in a circular motion for about a minute. Any common kitchen magnet will work but the stronger the magnet is, the more effective it will be.

  3. Step 3

Confirm that the card has been successfully demagnetized by attempting to use it at a store. If it was not successfully demagnetized, you may need a stronger magnet or to leave the magnet in contact with the card for a longer period of time.

Tips & Warnings
  • For added security, cut your old credit cards up with scissors or shred them before disposal.
  • Data erased with a magnet is irretrievable; you will need to replace the card to use it again.
