How to Use a Wireless Phone as a Modem

These days the Internet has become an indispensable tool. But what do you do when a Wi-Fi connection is not available? The easiest thing to do is use your cell phone as a modem. While the speed won't be as fast, it will allow you to send e-mails and perform light Web surfing.

Instructions

Connect your laptop to the cell phone using a USB cable. Your computer will see that a new device has been installed and it will ask you for the drivers. Usually your phone's drivers will come on a CD that you can slide into your drive. If it didn't, then you will need to go to the phone manufacturer's website to download them.

Install the Internet connection software from your phone carrier. This may have come on a disc, if you bought your phone and the plan together. If not, you will need to go to your carrier's website and download it.

    • 3

Launch the software by clicking on it in the user's menu. Once it is running, dial one of the provided numbers, put in your log-in and password details and then click "Dial." The modem will take a few seconds to connect. Depending on the network you're on, and the speed of your phone, you should get 56K dial up speed or better.

Tips & Warnings

  • Most newer cell phones are web-enabled and can be used as modems. If you aren't sure, check your user's manual. If your phone can't transmit data, you can purchase a PC card modem for your computer. If you have a blue tooth enabled phone and laptop, it's even easier to connect to the Internet. Instead of connecting your computer with a cable, you will simply turn the blue tooth on in both devices and make them discoverable. Once they have found each other, you will need to right-click on the mobile phone and then click "Connect Dial-up networking." You will then give both devices a pin number to connect with one another. Put in your log-in ID and password to begin.
